Mistakes can be scary

This month has been tough on little Luke.  It took him 3 full weeks to recover from the last hospitalization and stomach flu.  He felt better for 2 days, then last Saturday he woke up with a low grade fever and lethargic.  We took him to the on call pediatrician hoping it was just an ear infection .  The doctor did not see anything wrong with Lukie that would cause him to have a fever.  So we were admitted to the hospital for possible line infection.  After 36 hours cultures remained negative (which is a very good thing).
But there was a medical mistake made during our stay.  The last night we stayed in the hospital the Hospital Pharmacist made Lukie's TPN for the night (something that she is not used to doing).  In the morning labs results showed that his magnesium was really high.  The only explanation was that there was a mistake in making his TPN.  They did an investigation and found that there was a key stoke error made by the pharmacist while making his TPN resulting in way too much magnesium.  The hospital takes things like this very serious and took every measure to make sure little Luke was ok.  Luckily he was fine and we were able to go home later that afternoon. The doctors just had to follow him closely the next few days.  Lukie is feeling better, and we are happy to be home together again.  But Lukie did tell me that "it is fun to stay in the hospital", I think he enjoys all of the attention.
One thing that we are worried about now is drug shortages in his TPN.  We have been battling shortages for a long time and it just keeps getting worse.  He is no longer receiving everything that he needs via TPN.  We have to give him a hand full of supplements to make up for what he is missing.  We are now missing, calcium, phosphorus,and selenium.  He is also low on vitamin B12 and vitamin D that we give him supplements for.  This week we finally got back multivitamins which we hope will stay around for a little while.  It is scary thing is trying to gives all of these supplements to someone with intestinal failure and can not tolerate  large quantities in his tummy. He also has to have extra weekly lab draws (along with his regular blood draws) to test for renal failure because he is not receiving phosphorus.We hope and pray that the FDA fixes these shortages soon:)

We also made a trip to PCMC this week to see if Luke had a possible obstruction.  He is such a big boy:)
