August 4th -
August 11th is Home Parenteral Nutrition Awareness Week. Parenteral Nutrition
is IV Fluids composed of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, electrolytes, vitamins
and minerals given via IV through a central line. Annually, over 500,000 hospitalized
patients require Parenteral Nutrition. Between 30,000-40,000 People in the
United States depend on daily home parenteral nutrition (HPN) to live. My son
Lukie is one of them. Without parenteral nutrition he would not have survived
the first weeks of his life. HPN now provides him the nutrients and fluids he
needs to thrive.
I thought it
would be fun to post a picture of Lukie's daily medical needs. This is on a "good" day when no
blood work or antibiotics are needed. I
am very thankful for HPN/TPN and modern day medicine that keeps Lukie happy and
healthy.Saturday, August 10, 2013
