Here we go Again....

We enjoyed being at home together as a family for one week.  Life was getting back to normal.  Luke was finally feeling like him self again and having fun playing basketball with his brothers.  I was just finishing up giving him a dose of his antibiotics.  All of the sudden he started crying and shaking and said he was freezing.......
NOT a good sign!  Whenever this happens when know he is septic.  So I called the hospitalist and he agreed that we needed to be admitted AGAIN!  When we arrived at the hospital the doctor said he looked up Luke's other line infections.  I guess there was a miss communication from our last hospital stay.  The lab told our ID doctor that his last infection Coag negative staph was sensitive to Nafficillan (the antibiotic we were sent home with).  Actually coag neg staph is resistant to Nafficillan, being that the infection was not being treated for the last 2 weeks like we thought it was!
But actually cultures grew positive for Klebsiella pneumoniae which is a very nasty bacteria that usually sends kids like Luke to the PICU.  We were so happy we caught it early and Luke remained stable.  But because this was his 4th line infection in 5 months Dr. O decided that it was time to replace his precious life line.  Dr. O feels that the line malfunctioned and had a microscopic crack that caused bacteria to leek into his blood causing all of the infections the last few months.  It was another long and crazy week in the hospital.

 Lukie was so Happy to see that his Elf Buddy came to spend the week in the hospital with him!

 Lukie loved playing with the volunteers.  This guy really hit it off with him, and he even agreed to wear a blue fluffy crown.

 There were a few misunderstandings this hospital stay.  UVRMC is now Primary Children's South.  Which means they rotate surgeons and have different protocols than what we are used to.  Lukie was scared to go in for surgery.  Poor little guy this was the first of 2 surgeries in one week.  The first one to remove the old broviac, and the second one was 5 days later to place a new broviac.

 Luke spent the week playing practical jokes on everyone in the hospital.  He had a squirting flower that Dennis rigged up for him.  The staff loves Luke because they have taken care of him since he was a baby.  They have become good friends:)

 Child Life specialists are wonderful!  Debbie had lots of fun activities everyday.  Luke loved doing spin art.  I think Luke actually enjoys staying in the hospital.  Everyone loves him and comes in to play, he has one on one time with mom and dad without his brothers, unlimited movies and video games, and he doesn't have to go to school and  do homework!

 Luke pretty much owns the playroom when we are at the hospital.

 The Child Life Specialist (Debbie) came into work early the morning that Luke was scheduled for his new broviac.  She new that he has a lot of anxiety with surgery.  We played with a Playmobile hospital set and talked about what it was like being in the hospital and having surgery.  Then Luke drew a picture of surgery.  We hung it on the window of the playroom.  Then she gave Lukie a splat ball to throw at surgery.  This really help let out some aggression!  Just then the surgery team came up and it was time to go.  Debbie grab her iPad and came to the OR with us.  Lukie played games on the iPad until he feel asleep.

 The new line was placed by Dr. Fenton (I forgot to take a picture).  His first words after surgery was "that was really hard".  Surgery was really tricky getting in the new broviac, and he had to use a smaller catheter than he wanted.  But the good thing was that he used the same vein as the last line so we were able to save a spot for more central lines.  This is central line #9 and working fine:).  Hopefully we can stay home for a long long time!
