Ending the year with a Bang!

My fear with having a new baby was that Lukie would get sick and end up in the hospital.  Christmas Day the nightmare came true.  Luke came down with a fever which is an automatic hospital admission.  Our insurance changed this year and we can no longer go to the local hospital we are used to.  We decided it might be easier to go to the ER located in Payson for labs and blood cultures and start IV antibiotics hoping we could return back home soon.  Mike took Luke to Mountain View Hospital while I stayed home, because I just had a c-section only 7 days earlier.  Luke's CVL is positional and is sometimes hard to get blood from.  Mike suggested putting cathflo in the line to get the blood culture.  There was an older nurse that thought he knew better.  He didn't listen to Mike and pushed a full syringe of saline into Luke's central line as hard and as fast as he could.  NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!  It broke his line immediately, if Luke would have had a clot in his line it would have gone straight to his heart.  You have to be so careful with central lines, a mistake like this could be fatal.  The nurse was arrogant did not apologize and said it was time to replace the line anyway. Um I don't think so!  We later learned that this nurse was terminated because of this.  Mike then took Luke to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake.
It was a long and stressful week.  Mike stayed at the hospital with Luke while I stayed home with the other boys and new baby I could not leave.  The week is kind of a blur.  So to make a long story short cultures never grew, meaning Luke did not have a line infection.  He tested positive for rhino virus and parainfluenza.  Whenever Luke gets sick he has problems with his blood clotting and has something called DIC.  He also gets a lot of nose bleeds.  One night he had what the doctors called a catastrophic nose bleed.  He throw up a ton of blood and was sent to the PICU.  An endoscope was done and everything looked fine.  They also cauterized his nose.  Luke received 3 units of blood and platelets.  They nurses and doctors were very worried about him because his blood didn't have the factors to clout on his own.  Mike called me upset and told me what was going on.  I decided to get a hotel room close to the hospital with my mom where I could be close to my sick little boy and take turns with Mike at the hospital.  It was such an emotional week being away from Luke while he needed me and trying to take care of everything at home.  It was also really hard for Mike to be alone and not have the support he needed and not seeing his new baby for a week.  Thanks for the support of Friends and family we survived!!  We couldn't have done it without all of the love support and prayers.
