Lukie's PICC line is gone!

I should have updated earlier but for those who don't know Lucas had surgery to place a broviac today. A broviac is similar to a PICC line but is surgical. Lucas's cultures from Monday came back with an EColi infection. He also tested positive for influenza. It has been a tough week for him. This was his third infection with this PICC line so doctors felt it was time to get rid of his PICC line and place a Broviac. There is a less chance for broviac to get infected. We were hoping to do this yesterday when surgeons came to Utah Valley. But they couldn't because of positive blood cultures. So we made a trip to Primary Children's for a broviac. The surgery took an hour and a half and went well. The surgeon was hoping to use a common facial vein they often use in difficult line patients and preemies. This vein is there 98% of the time, but guess what Lukie once again is not typical. So the surgeon went for a large vein in the neck. It was difficult to find the veins because of his jaundice, this also made the surgeon worry about too much bleeding due to his unhealthy liver. They also replaced the G Tube with a Mic-Key Button. This should be easier to care for. The surgeon also left several large veins available to use at other times because Lukie will need TPN for a long time and need several central lines. The broviac should last about year. Lukie is now recovering and we will be headed back to Utah Valley for the night. Things are going well and we should be home tomorrow!
