Test Results

Dr. Chumpitazi called this evening with Luke's test results from last week. The test shows that the stomach contracts well (which is good). How ever the small bowel and colon don't work well at all. Luke has something called neuropathic pseudo obstruction. Meaning the nerves in his bowel are not functioning. The doctor compared it to a ball you squeeze with your hand. The ball is like your intestines, when you squeeze the ball in your hand the ball gets miss formed and smaller (similar to when your intestines contract). When you release your hand the ball goes back to it's normal shape, that is also what your intestines are supposed to do. Lukie's muscles contract and hold the intestines and little longer than normal, than the intestines never return to the normal shape, than it squeezes hard again, causing muscle spasms like a charlie horse. This slows down things enough to causes a blockage. There is also weak spots through out the bowel. The colon also has several amoralities similar to the small bowel. Basically his nerves send the wrong message to the muscles. Luke received a few medications during testing that the doctor was hoping may be helpful. Unfortunately his body did not respond to them and didn't help in improving his motility. At this point we have done everything we can in helping little Lukie. The only treatment is small bowel transplant which we are not pursuing at this time. This is the realization that Lukie's intestines really don't work. Every time Lukie has a test we just keep hoping in the back of our minds that the doctors will be able to find something, maybe just one spot of bowel that doesn't work. This is the realization that we needed that yes Lukie does have a lot of problems, and yes we have done everything we can to help him.
